How to Grow Grass on a Sponge

Grass seed will germinate with constant access to moisture, which makes the seeds easy to grow on a damp sponge. Growing grass seed on a sponge is a simple activity for children. Parents can cut the sponges into shapes to make grass animals or houses. As long as you keep the sponge moist, the grass should stay alive for two weeks or more.

Instructions

    • 1

Rinse the sponge under cold water to clean it, then place it in a large bowl.

    • 2

Fill the bowl halfway with water.

    • 3

Sprinkle the sponge with an even layer of grass seed. The thicker you want the grass to grow on the sponge, the denser the layer of grass seed should be. Do not add so much seed that you cannot see the surface of the sponge.

    • 4

Press the seeds into the crevices of the sponge with a fork.

    • 5

Maintain the water level by refilling the bowl as the water evaporates. Do not pour the water directly onto the sponge. The grass should sprout within one to two weeks.
