How to Roll Bahia Grass After Sodding

Bahia sod is a warm-season turf type that grows well in warm climates or areas in the southern parts of the United States. Gardeners prize this grass for its ability to grow in sand and acidic soils, survive drought and tolerate foot traffic. However, it is important for gardeners to install their Bahia sod correctly to help the grass develop strong roots by adhering it to the soil. Incorrect placement may result in the crushing of the new Bahia sod.

Instructions

    • 1

Fill a 60- to 75-pound lawn roller until it is one-third or halfway filled with water. Adding more water can crush Bahia's top growth. Because Bahia sod needs an extensive root system to survive drought, it is important to ensure that the grass roots are firmly in the soil by pressing down the sod with the lawn roller.

    • 2

Push the lawn roller back and forth across the lawn following an imaginary line. Check the Bahia sod's edges when rolling to make sure that they aren't drying up. Press down any lifted edges.

    • 3

Fill in any open joints or cracks in the Bahia sod with soil. Rake the surface of the sod to distribute excess soil.

    • 4

Give the lawn enough water, so the soil is moist at a depth of 6 to 8 inches. Dig a 6- to 8-inch hole in the yard to check.

    • 5

Keep the Bahia sod moist until the roots knit into the soil or become established. To find out if the sod has knitted to the soil, lift up a piece to look for tiny roots connected to the soil.
