How to Regrow Ornamental Grass

Dig the ornamental grass up with a shovel. Cut the clump of grass into pieces with a sharp knife or ax. Discard the pieces of ornamental grass that are old, dead and diseased. Choose healthy, strong-growing plants. Use gloves when handling ornamental grass since the edges of the grass are sharp.

Remove all weed from the planting site by hand. Dig up the soil to the depth of 24 inches. Break up the soil clumps with the side of the shovel.

Spread a 4-inch layer of compost or well-rotted manure on top of the soil. Mix this into the top 12 inches of loosened soil. Organic material incorporated into the soil gives the ornamental grass a source of long-lasting nutrients.

Dig a hole the size of the root ball and place the ornamental grass division in the hole. Fill the hole with soil. Gently firm the soil around the grass to hold it in place.

Spread a 2- to 3-inch layer of wood chips around the ornamental grass. Mulching reduces weed growth and preserves soil moisture.

Pour water directly onto the root ball at least once a week or whenever the soil is dry. Keep the soil moist for several weeks until new growth begins, which signals the establishment of new roots. The ornamental grass will continue to grow until it is time to rejuvenate the plant again.
