Western Pennsylvania is suited to cool-season grasses. Kentucky bluegrass is the most common lawn grass in the state. Seedland recommends the cultivars Midnight, Blue Ridge and KenBlue, and fine fescue or creeping red fescue for mixing with bluegrass for shady lawns.
For spring planting, bluegrass should be planted from February to May. Bentgrass may be planted anytime between March and August. Tall fescue, KY-31, creeping red fescue and perennial ryegrass can be planted in the spring.
Fall planting is preferential for many grasses, including tall fescue, KY-31, creeping red fescue and perennial ryegrass. Annual ryegrass should be planted in the fall. Bluegrass should be planted from September to November. Each of the listed grasses is suited to all of the USDA hardiness zones of western Pennsylvania.
