When to Plant Grass in West Pennsylvania?

According to the USDA plant hardiness zone map, the western part of Pennsylvania contains zones ranging from 4b to 6b. The turf grass selection climate zone map places this half of the state in zone 7. The turf grass map is created based on climate and temperature factored together.
  1. Grass Selection

    • Western Pennsylvania is suited to cool-season grasses. Kentucky bluegrass is the most common lawn grass in the state. Seedland recommends the cultivars Midnight, Blue Ridge and KenBlue, and fine fescue or creeping red fescue for mixing with bluegrass for shady lawns.

    Spring Planting

    • For spring planting, bluegrass should be planted from February to May. Bentgrass may be planted anytime between March and August. Tall fescue, KY-31, creeping red fescue and perennial ryegrass can be planted in the spring.

    Fall Planting

    • Fall planting is preferential for many grasses, including tall fescue, KY-31, creeping red fescue and perennial ryegrass. Annual ryegrass should be planted in the fall. Bluegrass should be planted from September to November. Each of the listed grasses is suited to all of the USDA hardiness zones of western Pennsylvania.
