How to Make a Clippings Composer

Creating your own clippings composter can be a great way to dispose of your lawn and other clippings. It will save on your disposal bill if you currently pay for clippings to be hauled away, make it easy to keep your yard clean after mowing and other maintenance, and provide a source of fresh compost for your vegetable and flower gardens. While there are quite a lot of expensive composters on the market, you can easily create your own using a few simple tools.

Things You'll Need

  • Hammer and nails
  • Wood planks (sufficient to cover 3 sides of a cube that is at least 4 by 4 by 4 feet in size)
  • 4 pressure-treated posts at least 5 feet in length
  • Shovel

Instructions

    • 1

Find a good location in your yard for the composter. It should be at least 4 feet tall, and 4 feet on each side, square. If your clippings pile is smaller than 3 cubic feet or higher than 6 feet, it may not compost properly.

    • 2

Determine where your four corner posts will be and dig down about 1 foot for each.

    • 3

Place the posts in the holes, fill up with dirt. Stamp the dirt down as much as possible so that the posts will stay stable.

    • 4

Nail the planks to the posts.

    • 5

Lay a thick layer of old leaves or other brown plant debris at the bottom of the composter. This will allow the pile to aerate better when you add your clippings.

    • 6

Add grass clippings mixed in with other clippings in thin layers.
