Rye Grass Planting in Louisiana

Among the most widely-planted forage crops in Louisiana and across the Southeastern United States, annual ryegrass is a bunching cool-season grass that grows 2 to 5 feet tall. Though easy to establish from seed, it must be planted at the correct time of year for best results.
  1. Time Frame

    • Ryegrass should be planted between September 20 and October 15 if you are planting a prepared seedbed. If you choose sod planting, plant around October 15.

    Varieties

    • Of the two major ryegrass types -- annual ryegrass and perennial ryegrass -- the former is most often grown in Louisiana because perennial ryegrass does not fare well in the hot southern climate. Louisiana State University recommends several varieties of annual ryegrass, including Big Boss, Prine, Marshall, Diamond T. and Verdure.

    Uses

    • Though not widely used as a turf grass, annual ryegrass is widely planted as a winter and spring forage crop. It is noted for its high yield, forage quality, ease of establishment and tendency to form a dense sod.
