Turf-Type Tall Fescue

Tall fescue is a cool-season grass that is grown across much of the U.S. and Canada. Newer cultivars of this grass are referred to as "turf-type" tall fescue, and are among the most popular lawn grasses in some areas.
  1. Identification

    • Tall fescue is traditionally a coarse textured, medium-green, bunch-type grass. Turf-type tall fescue tends to have a darker color, lower growth habit and density as well as finer texture, making it difficult to distinguish from fine fescues.

    Conditions

    • Tall fescue grows in all but the hottest parts of the U.S. It thrives in moist but well-drained soils that are fertile and have a pH between 5.5 and 6.5. Turf-type tall fescue grows well in sun or shade, and is durable enough to tolerate moderate lawn traffic.

    Establishment

    • Tall fescue is typically established from seed. Late summer to early fall is the best time of year for seeding. In cooler climates you can plant sooner --- around August 15. If you live in a warmer area, it may be better to wait until early October.
