When to Plant Rye Grass in Mississippi?

Annual ryegrass is one of many grass varieties grown in Mississippi. Farmers regularly use it as a forage crop, and should plant it at just the right time of year for the best growth.
  1. Types

    • There are two types of ryegrass, annual and perennial. Perennial ryegrass rarely grows in the American south because it is not well adapted to the climate. Annual ryegrass, however, thrives in pastures all over the state.

    Establishment

    • If you are planting a prepared seedbed, you can plant in September; if you are over-seeding a pasture of warm-season grass, you should wait until October. You can plant a bit sooner in southern Mississippi than in the northern part of the state of Mississippi.

    Uses

    • Landscapers do not typically use annual ryegrass as turf grass, but according to Mississippi State University it is the most important and versatile cool-season forage grass in the State. It can provide winter and spring forage for a variety of livestock.
