When to Seed Tall Fescue?

Timing is an important factor when you plant tall fescue. This cool-season grass can suffer poor growth or fail altogether if planted at the wrong time of year, but it can provide an attractive, durable lawn for years once established.
  1. Time Frame

    • Late summer to early fall is widely regarded as the best time to spread seed for tall fescue. Planting in early spring is also an option in many areas, but the risk of injury from summer heat makes fall seeding preferable.

    Considerations

    • Tall fescue will grow in all but the hottest areas of the United States, and location is a factor in when you plant. You can seed starting around August 15 in cooler areas, but in warmer climates it is better to wait until late September or early October.

    Conditions

    • Tall fescue thrives in well-drained, fertile soil with a pH between 5.5 and 6.5. It grows well in both sun and shade, is durable and cold-tolerant, but does not respond well to extreme heat.
