Can Grass Be Recycled into Useful Products?

Grass breaks down into natural elements, which are useful as building blocks to nurture your garden plants or amend the soil in a garden bed. You can turn grass into "useful products" that you can apply to your lawn and garden.
  1. Process

    • Since grass is a natural product, it decomposes naturally. You can leave clippings on your yard where they will decompose or transfer them to your compost pile where they'll turn into compost with your other yard and food waste. The compost can then be used to enrich your garden soil. Grass clippings can also serve as mulch for your garden bed.

    Warning

    • While all grass does decompose naturally, you should not try to recycle your grass if it's been treated with pesticides, since they can pollute your compost pile. Only grass that's chemical-free should be composted.

    Considerations

    • Grass takes up landfill space, and some states have banned the product from their landfills. Whether you just want to "go green," want to see the backyard alchemy of turning grass into something useful or cannot legally dispose of it with your garbage, recycled grass can provide needed nutrients nitrogen, phosphorous and potassium to plants.
