Weed Control in Monkey Grass

Monkey grass (Ophiopogon japonicus), a common name for mondo grass, is an ornamental evergreen. Mondo grass forms dense mounds of foliage needing little care. Effective weed control requires planting preparation and mulching.
  1. Features

    • Mondo grass forms dense grass clumps, making it effective groundcover that fills borders, rock gardens and pool landscapes. It grows in filtered sun to shade and rarely needs mowing. At maturity, the grass is 8 to 16 inches tall. Its height and compact growth resist weeds, but young monkey grass is vulnerable to weed incursions.

    Preparation

    • Eliminate existing weeds and grasses before planting mondo grass. A broad spectrum herbicide containing glyphosate eradicates most weeds and competing grasses. Use an herbicide designed for lawn renovation that allows planting within three weeks.

    Mulching

    • Apply mulch around newly-planted monkey grass. The mulch controls weeds until the ornamental grass is established. Annually apply new mulch and herbicides as needed. Be sure the herbicide label specifies the product is for use on mondo grass.
