When Does Western Wheatgrass Go Dormant?

Western wheatgrass is a perennial grass found in the western United States and Canada. It comes in a variety of species and is useful for livestock forage and erosion control. Western wheatgrass is weather hardy and easy to establish. It grows quickly in areas that are difficult for most other vegetation.
  1. Time Frame

    • Western wheatgrass is a cool-season grass. It begins growing in early spring and goes dormant during hot summer months. Growth begins again in the fall, but ceases during cold winter temperatures.

    Features

    • Western wheatgrass is extremely hardy during dormancy. It can survive heat, cold, and even grazing during these periods.

    Effects

    • If nitrogen is applied to Western wheatgrass before dormancy, it will grow with warm weather grasses.
