Can You Plant Grass Seed in March in South Carolina?

The state of South Carolina presents several varying environments, complicating grass selection and care. For certain grasses, not only can you plant grass seed in March, you should.
  1. Time Frame

    • Seed bermudagrass and most zoysiagrasses from late spring to early summer, March through May. Apply 1 to 2 lbs. of seed per 1,000 square feet of lawn, according to the Clemson Cooperative Extension.

    Types

    • Growers can plant warm-season grasses in spring or summer. These include zoysiagrass, St. Augustine, carpetgrass, centipedegrass, bermudagrass and Pensacola and Argentine bahiagrasses. Growers can also plant the cool-season grasses buffalo, creeping red fescue, tall fescue, KY-31, bluegrass, bentgrass and perennial ryegrass in spring.

    Considerations

    • Bermudagrass, centipedegrass and zoysiagrass are commonly used in South Carolina. Tall fescue works in northern reaches and higher elevations, while bermudagrass and St. Augustine grass offer salt tolerance and are adapted to the coastal environment. Except at high elevations, northern-adapted grasses only survive during cool seasons in South Carolina, according to the Clemson Cooperative Extension.
