Seed bermudagrass and most zoysiagrasses from late spring to early summer, March through May. Apply 1 to 2 lbs. of seed per 1,000 square feet of lawn, according to the Clemson Cooperative Extension.
Growers can plant warm-season grasses in spring or summer. These include zoysiagrass, St. Augustine, carpetgrass, centipedegrass, bermudagrass and Pensacola and Argentine bahiagrasses. Growers can also plant the cool-season grasses buffalo, creeping red fescue, tall fescue, KY-31, bluegrass, bentgrass and perennial ryegrass in spring.
Bermudagrass, centipedegrass and zoysiagrass are commonly used in South Carolina. Tall fescue works in northern reaches and higher elevations, while bermudagrass and St. Augustine grass offer salt tolerance and are adapted to the coastal environment. Except at high elevations, northern-adapted grasses only survive during cool seasons in South Carolina, according to the Clemson Cooperative Extension.
