Florida Grass Plugs Vs. Sod

Planting plugs or sod involves transplanting segments of grass to a cleared and prepared section of a yard. The difference lies in the size of the transplanted piece. Sod will cover an area, leaving no traces of dirt, and will provide the impression of an instant lawn. Grass plugs are much smaller pieces of grass that will require a longer period of time to grow together. There are advantages and disadvantages to both types of plantings, so weigh your options carefully before deciding which material to use on your Florida lawn.
  1. Sod

    • Sod has a finished look, prevents soil erosion and is relatively fast and easy to install when compared to plugs. Sod is expensive and can fail if not properly selected, installed and maintained.

    Plugs

    • Plugs are more than just cut up pieces of sod. They typically have better developed roots. Plugs are significantly cheaper than sod. Be aware that not all types of Florida grass are available as plugs. For example, only seeds or sod are viable planting methods for Bahia grass.

    Installation

    • Plant sod or plugs as soon as possible following delivery. Make sure there are no signs of disease, weeds or pests. Install sod side by side, without gaps or cracks, to suppress weed growth. Evenly space plugs in a triangular configuration. Plant plugs during the summer growing season, 12 inches or closer in spacing, to facilitate growth.
