When to Sow Western Wheatgrass

Western wheatgrass (Pascopyrum smithii) is a commonly used native grass that has distinctive blue-green leaves. If you want to grow western wheatgrass, you will need to know when to sow it.
  1. Time Frame

    • Western wheatgrass must be seeded in early spring, late fall or in late summer/early fall to properly grow. If sowed at other times of the year, your wheatgrass will not grow properly.

    Function

    • When sowing wheatgrass, plant 1/2 to 1 inch deep in fine to medium soil. You can seed 5 to 15 pounds of wheatgrass seed per acre.

    Warning

    • Do not let animals feed on western wheatgrass until it is fully mature or they may damage the crop. It can take up to four growing seasons before the grass is fully mature.
