Zoysiagrass Control

Although zoysiagrass makes an excellent turf grass due to its hardy nature and ease of growth, those same qualities also make it difficult to control and remove. Getting rid of zoysiagrass can be a major project for gardeners.
  1. Chemical Control

    • One of the most effective methods for controlling zoysiagrass involves chemical sprays that kill off the grass at the surface level and in the soil. Chemical sprays have the potential to kill other grass and beneficial plants, as well.

    Physical Control

    • Keeping zoysiagrass cut short and unable to produce seed helps control the reproduction of the grass, making future generations unlikely to emerge. Regular lawn mowing helps keep the zoysiagrass from setting seed each year.

    Planting

    • Seeding other types of competitive grass or planting other things, including shrubs, flowers and trees, in the lawn helps reduce the area where the zoysiagrass can grow. Other grass types help crowd out and replace the existing zoysiagrass.
