Optimal Growing Conditions for Switchgrass

Switchgrass (Panicum virgatum) is a perennial warm-season grass native to the tall-grass prairies of the United States. It is grown for wildlife cover, livestock grazing, as a biofuel crop and as an ornamental for landscaping.
  1. Description

    • Switchgrass grows 3 to 5 feet tall. Its stem is round with a reddish tint, and it has leaves approximately 2 feet in length that are bluish in color. Switchgrass can be distinguished from other warm-season grasses by the ligule of white hairs at the point where the leaf attaches to the stem.

    Soil

    • Switchgrass does best in loam or sandy loam. Deep, well-drained soils are best for optimal production. Soil pH should be between 6.0 and 8.0. A soil pH of 6.5 is best for switchgrass.

    Planting Time

    • The best planting time for switchgrass is when the soil reaches a temperature of 60 to 65 degrees Fahrenheit and air temperature is 75 to 85 degrees Fahrenheit. Ideally, switchgrass should be planted within two weeks of the recommended corn planting dates for your area.
