How to Grow Timothy Grass Indoors

Timothy grass is an important part of the diet of many domesticated animals. It can be fed to horses, cows, guinea pigs and other animals kept as pets or livestock. Usually timothy grass is cut and dried to make timothy hay. You can also grow timothy grass to feed as a dust- and mess-free alternative to hay for your indoor pets. It requires well drained, sandy loam soil to thrive and must be watered frequently throughout the growing cycle.

Instructions

  Place the plastic tray on the larger platter to catch water drainage as it flows from the tray.

  Mix 6 cups of loam with 2 cups of coarse sand in a plastic tray. Remove 1 cup of the mixture and set it aside. When the ingredients are mixed thoroughly and are homogenous, spread evenly throughout the tray.

  Mist water on the loam and sand mixture until it is wet to the touch. Gently press the soil down until it is lightly packed.

  Sprinkle timothy grass seeds evenly, allowing at least 1/4 inch of space between each seed.

  Pour the remaining cup of sand and loam mixture on top of the seeds and spread it evenly. It should be no thicker than 1/2 inch.

  Mist the top of the loam and soil mixture with water until it is just slightly damp. Press the dirt gently with your fingertips so it is compact.

  Place the tray in a very sunny area, such as in front of a large window.

  Mist the grass until the soil is damp each day.
