How to Prep for Planting Grass Seeds

Planting a lawn from seed takes longer to establish than a sod lawn, but it's also much cheaper. Prepare the planting area for the seeds to ensure an optimal growing environment. Grass needs well-drained, rich to sandy soil to grow well. Additionally, organic material helps your soil's texture.

Instructions

    • 1

Rake up all rocks and break up large clumps of soil with a hoe, and then work them into the rest of the soil.

    • 2

Remove all the weeds from the ground to prevent weeds from outperforming your grass seed. Use an herbicide to kill a large number of weeds, but avoid planting grass for two to three months after the herbicide application.

    • 3

Add a 2- to 3-inch layer of organic material such as compost or manure to the top of the soil. Work the compost into the soil to a depth of 6 to 8 inches; doing so improves aeration and the richness of the soil.
