The Most Effective Way to Kill Weeds & Grass for Resodding

Although it's not the cheapest way to start a lawn, sod can instantly give a patchy or weedy yard complete coverage in thick, lush grass. Perhaps the most important aspect in a new sod installation is soil preparation, which often involves grass and weed removal. It's important to be cautious with weed and grass removal as any herbicide used to kill grass may also make it difficult to establish the new sod.

Instructions

    • 1

Rent a sod cutter from a local home improvement or garden supply store. These machines remove strips of grass and weeds, along with their roots. According to Ashley Womble of This Old House Magazine, sod cutters are the most efficient way to remove grass and weeds before laying new sod.

    • 2

Position the sod cutter in a corner of the lawn and position the blade so it's 1 inch below the surface of the soil, which should be the default setting. All sod cutters operate differently, so consult the user's guide if you are unsure of how to set up.

    • 3

Start the machine according to the directions of the particular product. Push it forward in a straight line along the edge of the lawn until you reach the opposite corner.

    • 4

Turn the sod cutter around at a 180-degree turn and push it in a straight line, toward the starting point. The second line of stripped sod should slightly overlap the first line to ensure you remove all of the grass and weeds. Continue the process until all of the grass and weeds are cut.

Bring the sod to a local lawn waste management facility. Depending on your location, it may be illegal to dispose of grass in a landfill.
