How to Grow Grass on a Bare Area of the Yard

It can be a lot of work to create a perfect, thick green lawn. After putting forth effort and working to grow healthy grass, it is a rewarding feeling to view a perfect lawn. It is disappointing, however, when there is a bare area. Bare areas appear for many reasons, such as tough, non-draining soil, insects, disease, dog urine, foot traffic or amount of sunlight. Fortunately, it is possible to grow new grass in the bare spot and get your lawn looking full and healthy again.

Instructions

    • 1

Rake away leaves, dead grass or thatch from the bare area.

    • 2

Break the soil up using a shovel. If it is too tough, use a tiller.

    • 3

Rake the soil smooth. Spread a 1/2- to 1-inch thick layer of seeding soil over the area and rake it out.

    • 4

Dampen the soil with a garden hose.

    • 5

Use a handheld seed spreader to distribute a layer of seeds over the bare area.

    • 6

Apply fertilizer over the seeds. Choose a fertilizer made to stimulate root growth and make grass grow quicker and thicker.

    • 7

Rake the seeds and fertilizer into the soil. Cover with 1/4-inch layer of seeding soil and rake it smooth.

    • 8

Water the area with a sprinkler. Keep the soil moist. Water daily until the new grass is established.
