How to Hang a Rain Catcher Cup

Installing a rain catcher cup or rain gauge on your property allows you to measure rainfall and increases your knowledge about the local weather. You can apply this information to growing your lawn, flowers and vegetable garden. Every organism needs weekly watering to maintain its growth. By understanding the amount of rainwater you receive, you can adjust your watering practices to compensate for this amount. This avoids the damaging effects of over or under watering your plants. Installing a rain cup is done with a few common tools.

Instructions

    • 1

Find an ideal location to install the rain catcher cup. Good locations are a deck railing, fence post, mailbox post or in the middle of the yard on a dedicated mount. The location should be well away from any object that is taller than the gauge, like a roof or tree. This will block the rainfall from making it into the gauge affecting your measurements.

    • 2

Hold the rain gauge's mounting bracket to the post and make sure it is perfectly straight by holding a level against the side of it.

    • 3

Install two screws through the mounting brackets holes with a screwdriver. Tighten snugly, but do not over-tighten, as this may damage the plastic mount.

    • 4

Insert the rain catcher cup into the mounting bracket and wait for the next rainfall.
