How to Cut Fescue

Fescue is a variety of grass that is commonly used for turfs in residential lawns, golf courses and other public places. It is a cool season grass that can be planted in all but the southern U.S. states. Proper maintenance is the key to keeping your fescue lawn looking good. Cutting it too short leads to a bare, clumpy appearance and cutting it too high stresses the blades in high temperatures and can cause it to die.

Instructions

    • 1

Mow when the fescue grass grows to a maximum height of 4 1/2 inches before mowing it. If desired, you can also mow the fescue when it reaches 3 3/4 inches high. If you have just planted fescue seeds, wait until they reach 6 inches tall before mowing them for the first time.

    • 2

Mow on a dry day, and put on closed toed shoes and pants. If you have allergies or breathing problems, it's also a good idea to wear a dust mask and glasses while mowing.

    • 3

Set the mowing height on a lawn mower to between 2 1/2 to 3 inches high. If the fescue grass is growing in the shade, increase the mowing height to 3 1/2 inches.

    • 4

Push the mower over the entire fescue lawn in side-by-side rows to cut it.

    • 5

Repeat the cutting process once per week from spring through the fall when the fescue stops growing.
