Zoysia lawns benefit with an application of fertilizer not exceeding 2 lbs. nitrogen per 1,000 square feet. Applications of 1/2 to 1 lb. per 1,000 square feet are more typical.
A good ratio of fertilizer for zoysia is 4:1:2, or 16-4-6. To ensure that 1/2 lb. nitrogen is applied per 1,000 square feet, divide 50 by the first number in the fertilizer ratio. For a 5-5-15 fertilizer, divide 50 by 5. The result is 10 lbs. of product.
Applications of fertilizer in early spring tend to favor weed growth. The first yearly application of fertilizer on zoysia should occur approximately three weeks after the last frost. A second application may be applied in early summer. Fertilizing in the fall is not recommended, as it can reduce winter hardiness.
