Will Fertilizer Harm a Zoysia?

Established zoysia grass generally requires only minimal fertilization. Over-fertilization or untimely applications of fertilizer potentially can harm zoysia and lead to its decline. A soil analysis will give definitive results as to its specific needs, but usually one to two applications annually is sufficient.
  1. Recommended Rates

    • Zoysia lawns benefit with an application of fertilizer not exceeding 2 lbs. nitrogen per 1,000 square feet. Applications of 1/2 to 1 lb. per 1,000 square feet are more typical.

    Calculating the Rates

    • A good ratio of fertilizer for zoysia is 4:1:2, or 16-4-6. To ensure that 1/2 lb. nitrogen is applied per 1,000 square feet, divide 50 by the first number in the fertilizer ratio. For a 5-5-15 fertilizer, divide 50 by 5. The result is 10 lbs. of product.

    When To Fertilize

    • Applications of fertilizer in early spring tend to favor weed growth. The first yearly application of fertilizer on zoysia should occur approximately three weeks after the last frost. A second application may be applied in early summer. Fertilizing in the fall is not recommended, as it can reduce winter hardiness.
