How to Water a Dwarf Fescue

Dwarf fescue is a variety of turf grass that is shorter than the tall fescue variety, to which is it closely related. The dwarf varieties are thinner and develop a more lush, carpet-like texture. The low height and slow growth rate mean the grass requires less maintenance, making it a good choice for golf courses, sports fields, and other locations with high traffic. In general, dwarf fescue grass requires less moisture than other types of fescue.

Instructions

    • 1

Attach a garden hose to the end of a sprinkler, and set the sprinkler in the center of the area where the dwarf fescue is planted. If you have an in-ground sprinkler system, skip this step.

    • 2

Turn the sprinklers on, and water the dwarf fescue once per day to a 3-inch depth immediately after planting the seed or after installing dwarf fescue sod. Increase watering to twice per day if installation occurs during summer, to prevent the top of the soil from ever drying out.

    • 3

Wait at least 14 to 21 days after planting, and then reduce watering to twice per week, making sure to saturate the ground to a 3-inch depth each time. At the height of summer, additional watering may be required if you notice wilting or if footprints remain after you walk on the dwarf fescue.

Stop watering the dwarf fescue grass in the late fall or early winter when it goes dormant for the year. When the grass is dormant, it runs brown. Resume watering in the early spring as soon as the first green blades are detected.
