How to Make Grass Grow or Cover the Mud in My Walkway

Walkways made of soil or sand look attractive when first installed, but over time and with heavy foot traffic, they develop depressions and bare spots. These spots tend to collect water from rainfall and soon lead to a muddy mess. One way to solve this problem is to grow grass over the muddy walkway. The grass provides a firm carpet to walk on and absorbs excess water to prevent muddy conditions from developing.

Things You'll Need

  • Seeding soil
  • Shovel
  • Grass seed
  • Grass starter fertilizer
  • Rake

Instructions

    • 1

Wait until the muddy area dries out completely before attempting to repair it.

    • 2

Fill the depression with a special seeding soil until it is level with the surface of the surrounding soil. The soil should be at least 1/2 inch thick for the grass seed to successfully grow. Smooth the soil out as evenly as possible on top, but do not pack it down.

    • 3

Spread grass seed onto the area using the amounts specified on the package for a spot seeding application. Choose a grass seed that matches your surrounding lawn, or that is appropriate for the amount of sunlight in the location of the walkway.

    • 4

Spread a grass starter fertilizer on the area to simulate growth and fill in the walkway quickly with grass. Use the amount specified on the fertilizer package and be careful not to overapply it since this will burn the grass.

    • 5

Rake the walkway gently with a rake to mix the grass seed and fertilizer into the top 1/4 inch of the soil.

    • 6

Apply another 1/4 inch of soil on top of the area smoothing it out again with the rake until it is even.

    • 7

Water the walkway with 1 inch of water, and then water as often as needed to keep the location damp until the grass seed germinates. Normally, watering is required daily, but if the walkway drains poorly you may not need to water daily.
