Grass Plant Care

Grasses are available in warm-season and cool-season varieties. Warm-season grass goes dormant during cool weather, and cool-season types stop growing during hot summer weather. Grass plants are available in different sizes, from bonsai-height, about 2 inches tall, to ornamental sizes more than 10 feet tall.
  1. Environment

    • Feed the grass plants lawn fertilizer accord to the directions on the label. Feed the grass only during its growing season so that the grass has a chance to use the fertilizer. Feeding grass plants while they are dormant causes an explosion of weed growth.

    Water

    • Keep the soil evenly moist while germinating grass seed or establishing grass-plant roots. This reduces stress on the plants caused by lack of water. Once established, most grass varieties will need water only during hot, dry weather.

    Maintenance

    • Mow the grass down to the recommended height for the variety with a lawn mower or trimmer. This stimulates new grass plant growth. Ornamental grass is cut down to a couple of inches tall in the spring to make room for fresh, vigorous growth.
