How to Prevent the Grass From Turning Brown From Dog's Urine

Take a walk around your neighborhood and you can probably spot a few of your neighbors who own dogs; their grass is plagued with brown spots, which are sometimes surrounded by a ring of dark green grass. Training your dog to urinate in less conspicuous areas of the lawn is one way to combat the problem, but fortunately, there are a few other things you can do to help prevent the grass from turning brown even if he does go in an obvious location.

Instructions

    • 1

Water the area where the dog urinates soon afterwards. It is the nitrogen and salt in a dog's urine that causes the brown spots. Water helps dilute the amount of nitrogen and salt in the soil and sends it deeper underground. An inch of water should suffice for most soil types.

    • 2

Poke the soil a few times in the area where the dog urinates after watering, especially if watering the urine spots alone does not seem to work. This will further help the excess nitrogen and salt seep deeper into the soil, away from the grass and its roots.

    • 3

Care for your lawn properly to encourage a healthy lawn, which is better able to handle less-than-ideal circumstances, such as exposure to dog urine. For example, most lawns should be mowed at a height of 2 to 3 inches, much higher than many people think. Water your lawn deeply during droughts with about an inch of water once or twice a week rather than watering more frequently with just a little bit of surface water.

    • 4

Fertilize your lawn properly and on a good schedule, which will vary among grass types. Then the grass may not respond as drastically to the nitrogen and salts in the dog's urine.

Encourage your dog to drink more water, which will help dilute the urine. However, always talk to your vet first if you are adding a product designed to encourage urination or plan to change his diet in any way. This may be dangerous for your pet. Also consider your dog may have more accidents if he is encouraged to drink more water.
