Water the lawn for two weeks to promote your grassy weed growth. Vigorously growing grassy weeds are easier to kill off with herbicide than slowly growing weeds.
Apply a post-emergent selective herbicide to your lawn. Use a selective herbicide that will not harm your preferred grass type. For example, gardeners may use a post-emergent herbicide that contains chlorsulfuron to kill off tall fescue or perennial ryegrass from their bermuda grass. Check the label to see if it is safe for your grass type.
Reapply the herbicide in a few days or according to the label. Try to pick a dry time of year for applying post-emergent herbicide, because the chemicals need to be absorbed into the foliage of the plant.
Dig up dead areas of grass. Till these bare areas, so that the soil isn't compacted. Mix up in a bucket your preferred grass seed and compost.
Spread a thin layer of your seed and compost mixture on the bare areas in the lawn. Water your grass seed to promote grass seed germination. Keep those areas watered until they have sprouted seedlings.
