Does Blood Make Grass Grow?

All grass types need nitrogen to grow well. Dried blood, sometimes called blood meal, is a good source of organic nitrogen for lawns and plants. Dried blood, however, is not a complete fertilizer, and its use should be supplemented with other organic or synthetic sources for a healthy lawn.
  1. Source

    • Cattle is the main source of blood meal.

Blood meal is derived primarily from slaughterhouses. It has a typical analysis of between 12-0-0 and 12.5-1.5-0.6.

    How to Use

    • Like all organics, blood meal is activated by microbial activity in the soil.

As an organic lawn fertilizer, blood meal releases its nitrogen slowly over a two- to six-week period. It should be reapplied every six to eight weeks to the lawn throughout the growing season.

    Precautions

    • Applying too much blood meal can burn lawn roots.

Dried blood is a highly concentrated source of nitrogen. Avoid applying more than the recommended rates.
