What Time of the Day Should I Water Sod Grass?

Because installing sod is such an expensive and labor-intensive project, you'll want to make sure your investment is properly taken care of. Although the exact quantity of water you'll need for your lawn may vary based upon the type of grass you've chosen, the time of day you water is important to the overall growth of the sod. Avoid problems with your sod by following the suggested care instructions given to you by your sod provider.
  1. Time

    • Prevent fungus by watering at midday, suggests sod company JB Instant Lawn on their website. Watering late at late night --- especially during the hot season --- may cause problems with fungus growing between the sod and soil layers. Watering during the heat of the day also helps reduce sod stress.

    Quantity

    • Water the sod until it is completely saturated and water runs off onto sidewalk or driveway. Watering so deep ensures that the water gets down the necessary 6 to 8 inches to promote proper root growth. After the sod is established, continue watering it about 1 inch, every four to seven days for the first few months.

    Frequency

    • Keep the soil line moist but not soggy, suggests the University of Rhode Island. Check for adequate moisture by gently lifting up the corner of the sod. If the soil is too wet, skip one day of watering. Too much water may cause root rot.

Water once a day for the next four to six weeks until the sod pieces are firmly established in the soil. Checking for rooting is simple, gently tug on a corner piece of the sod; if it comes up easily the roots haven't taken hold yet. If you can't pull up the sod easily it's taking root. Check for even establishment throughout the lawn by testing a few other pieces of sod. Once the sod is established you can water at any time of the day.

    Considerations

    • After the sod is established reduce the frequency of watering gradually, but increase the amount of water, suggests the Iowa State University. Once you've watered the lawn three to four times you can reduce the watering to once a week.
