How to Use Malt Extract As Plant Fertilizer

Made from soaked and dried cereal grains, malt contains high amounts of vitamins and minerals. For this reason, you can apply liquid malt extract to outdoor plants as a fertilizer and pesticide. Greens keepers sometimes use liquid malt extract to encourage the green growth of turf grasses. Liquid malt extract also helps manage parasitic nematode worm populations in sandy soil. You can apply malt to vegetation by itself or combine it as a supplement for another type of fertilizer to create an enhanced plant food formula.

Instructions

    • 1

Dilute pure malt extract with 50 percent water, stirring the solution thoroughly. Homemade or store-bought malt extract can be used, as long as it is pure and unhopped. Malt extracts sold for fertilizing purposes may already be diluted with 50 percent of water. In this case, no additional water is needed at this point.

    • 2

Combine one part of malt extract, either pre-diluted or self-diluted, with five parts additional water in a sprayer.

    • 3

Spray the lawn or sandy soil with a consistent coating of the malt extract dilution. Use approximately 1 1/4 oz. of diluted solution per square yard.
