Can You Seed Your Lawn in October in Utah?

October is an ideal time to seed your cool-weather lawn in Utah, according to the Utah State University Extension. A little bit of preparation in the fall will help ensure strong, healthy grass the following year.
  1. Before Seeding

    • You can help your lawn recover from the stress of summer heat by fertilizing before you seed. Select a grass fertilizer that is high in nitrogen, which will promote growth and build deep roots. If you are seeding a large dead area, tilling in organic matter such as compost or manure will give your seeds a good start.

    Seeding

    • Seeding a lawn in fall requires overseeding and generous watering. Before you overseed, first mow your lawn as short as possible and aerate the area. Once seeded, your lawn will need daily watering so that it can become well established.

    After Seeding

    • Your lawn will need less water as winter approaches. Taper off slowly once daytime temperatures begin to drop. To keep your grass seedlings from being injured, keep people, animals and vehicles off the lawn.

    Warm-Weather Grass

    • If your lawn consists of buffalo grass or other warm-weather varieties, you must wait until June to seed. Warm-weather grasses need consistent high temperatures to germinate and grow.
