Type of Weedkiller Used on Zoysia Grass

Zoysia grass is a warm-season perennial weed that invades dormant or cool-season grass types, according to the University of Illinois. Because zoysia is a perennial weed, selective herbicides are not available for controlling the grass. Gardeners must use a broad spectrum weedkiller to remove zoysia from their lawns.
  1. Broad Spectrum Weedkiller

    • Kill invading zoysia grass with a weedkiller that contains glyphosate, which works by inhibiting the weed's ability to produce proteins. Because broad spectrum herbicide kills anything that it comes in contact with, gardeners must reseed their turf five to 14 days after applying the weedkiller, according to the University of Minnesota. Using glyphosate at the proper time increases its effectiveness.

    When to Use

    • Spray zoysia grass in August when cool-season grass greens up for the season. If zoysia is invading warm-season grass, spray the herbicide in the spring. Spray the weeds when there will be at least 48 hours of dry weather. Not only will glyphosate lose its effectiveness if sprayed before a rainfall, but its runoff will leach into ground water.

    How to Use

    • Avoid mowing the lawn for two days before and after using weedkiller. The more surface area on zoysia, the more effective the spray will be. Wear protective gear when spraying any type of weedkiller. Gloves, mask, long sleeves and pants protect you from exposure to the chemicals. Turn off your irrigation system before spraying. Apply weedkiller to the foliage of zoysia grass. Be careful when spraying around ornamental plants. Reapply in a few days if the zoysia is unresponsive.

    Reseeding

    • Reseed bare areas or the places in the lawn where zoysia formally grew. Use the correct amount of grass seed when sowing. For instance, Kentucky bluegrass must be distributed at a rate of 2 to 3 lbs. per 1,000 square feet. Gardeners who use too much can cause seedlings to compete with each other, which slows the establishment time. Cover the grass seed with 1/8-inch of compost. Keep the seeds moist to encourage germination.
