Planting Recommendations for Bambusa Textilis Bamboo

A native of China and a plant that tolerates drought very well, Bambusa textilis is an ideal specimen for gardeners wishing to quickly grow privacy screens with a stout, exotic appearance. The most significant drawback is the amount of litter it drops.
  1. Slender Weaver's Bamboo

    • Slender weaver's bamboo (Bambusa textilis) gains its common name from the practice of using this bamboo in weaving and textiles. It is also planted as a hedge or privacy screen due to its tendency to grow quickly and upright, often reaching 30 feet tall with canes 1 inch in diameter.

    Appearance

    • Bambusa textilis is an attractive plant with the ability to retain an attractive appearance even when topped or trimmed -- cane bottoms are bare with lush tops. It is also a clumping, or non-invasive, bamboo and suited for small spaces due to its rigid and compact presentation. A wide number of varieties and cultivars of Bambusa textilis exist.

    Planting Recommendations

    • Slender weaver's bamboo can be planted in areas where high winds -- like hurricanes -- normally damage other hedges like ficus. This bamboo grows well in moist, rich soil in either full sunshine or limited light, but because of its deep root system, it should be paired with shallow-rooted plants. Bambusa textilis is hardy to 10 degrees F and is perennial in U.S. Department of Agriculture planting zones 8b to 11.
