Can You Put Down Grass Seed After Treating With Trimec?

Trimec contains three types of broadleaf weed killers – 2,4-d, Dicamba, and Mecoprop. It is effective on numerous types of weeds, including ones that are hard to kill, such as morning glories, oxalis, poison ivy, and poison oak. Trimec can be used on established lawns, playgrounds, and other areas where weeds are growing.
  1. Timing is Everything

    • Apply Trimec at least three weeks before seeding grass to eliminate weeds in the planting area. For best results, use when the weeds are actively growing and the soil is moist. Apply Trimec spray on a calm day when the temperature is between 60 and 90 degrees. Spray at least 24 hours before rain is expected or the area is irrigated.

    Under Pressure

    • Mix 1 ounce of Trimec liquid in 1 gallon of water in a pressure sprayer and use a coarse spray to thoroughly wet the weeds. Spray at the rate of 1 gallon per 250 square feet on bahiagrass, bermudagrass, Kentucky bluegrasses, fescues, perennial ryegrass or zoysiagrass. Spray 1 gallon per 500 square feet on centipedegrass and St. Augustinegrass.

    Get the Hose

    • Use a hose-end sprayer designed for lawns and apply as evenly as possible to completely cover the weeds with spray. A mixture of 5 ounces of Trimec liquid in 5 gallons of water in the jar on the hose-end sprayer will treat 1,250 square feet of bahiagrass, bermudagrass, Kentucky bluegrasses, fescues, perennial ryegrass or zoysiagrass. It will treat 2,500 square feet of centipedegrass and St. Augustinegrass.

    Keep the Environment Safe

    • Do not apply Trimec more than two times a year. Do not use on “Floratam” St. Augustinegrass in Florida, and do not use on carpetgrass, clover or dichondra when used as a groundcover. Do not directly spray or let the spray drift onto flowers, shrubs, trees or vegetables, as Trimec may damage them. Avoid spraying the roots of plants. Avoid spraying Trimec into bodies of water, and do not pour out excess spray near water sources.

    Keep Yourself Safe

    • Wear a chemical resistant apron or coveralls when pouring Trimec into containers larger than 1 gallon. Wear a long sleeve shirt, long pants, socks and shoes when spraying Trimec. Avoid getting the spray on skin or in eyes. Thoroughly wash any exposed skin immediately after application of Trimec. Wash clothing separate from other laundry. Keep people and pets out of treated areas until Trimec spray is dry.
