Centipede and Fescue Grass: Overseeding Seeds

Centipede and fescue grasses are two common turf with different growing seasons. Gardeners overseeding their centipede grass generally plant grass seeds in late spring. While those overseeding their fescue lawns, overseed in the fall when the air temperatures benefit grass growth. Gardeners will often grow both cool and warm season grass types together for a year-round green yard. Both grass types, however, must be overseeded at different times of the year.
  1. Overseeding Centipede

    • Prepare your lawn for overseeding in early spring, so that it is ready for centipede grass seed by late spring. Check your soil's pH range by performing a soil test. Centipede grass prefers to grow in slightly acidic soil with a pH range of 5.0 to 5.5. Make your soil more acidic based on the outcome of the soil test with sulfur. Soil that is too acidic may be amended using limestone.

    Overseeding Fescue

    • Plan to overseed your lawn with fescue in the early to late fall depending on where you live in the United States. This cool season grass prefers a pH range between 5.8 and 6.8. Check your soil's pH before planting. Fescue grass produces optimal growth when the air temperature ranges between 68 and 77 degrees F, according to gardening writer Walter Reeves of The Georgia Gardener website. Make sure that the soil temperature is above 60 F before planting of fescue grass seed germination.

    Preparing the Soil

    • Before overseeding your lawn with either fescue or centipede grass, kill all of you weeds using a herbicide that contains glyphosate. You don't have to worry about harming surrounding grass with the spray since you are already seeding the lawn. Furthermore, grass seedlings have difficulty germinating when they have to compete with weeds. Mow down the grass to prevent surrounding turf from competing with your grass seeds for the soil's nutrients and moisture. Rake up dead debris so as to expose the soil in the planting area. Seeds must have good soil contact to germinate.

    Overseeding

    • Pour the recommended amount of grass seed into your rotary spreader. Centipede grass must be distributed at a rate of 1/4 to 1/2 a pound of grass seed per 1,000 square feet, according to the Alabama Cooperative Extension. Fescue is seeded at a rate of 3 1/2 to 4 1/2 lbs. per 1,000 square feet, according to the University of California. Distribute the grass seeds evenly over the lawn. Water the grass seeds and keep the lawn moist for two weeks for germination.
