How to Make Potting Soil Mix with Composted Manure, Topsoil and Sand

A soil-based potting mix made from composted manure, topsoil and sand is a relatively heavy but well-draining medium that's ideal for most container plants. The inclusion of composted manure supplies beneficial organisms and nutrients to the mix while sand ensures proper drainage. Sterilizing the topsoil destroys harmful pathogens, insects and/or weed seeds. After the potting mix is prepared, it can be stored loosely covered in a dry place.
