How to Use Liquid Drip Fertilizer in Irrigation

Drip irrigation is used in the home garden to provide water in small amounts at regular intervals to keep your plants healthy and to cut down on the amount of work you need to do once the system is in place. Fertilizer containing all the nutrients necessary for healthy plant growth are supplied also at regular intervals throughout the growing season. You can apply liquid fertilizers through your irrigation system to provide a steady, consistent supply to your hungry plants.

Instructions

    • 1

Turn off your water supply and remove the filter system from your drip irrigation system at the outside faucet it is attached to.

    • 2

Screw a back flow preventer onto the outside water spout your irrigation system is attached to if one is not in place. Turn the back flow preventer clockwise to tighten it onto the threads. Back flow preventers prevent fertilizer water from backing up into the house, and is a legal requirement in most areas.

    • 3

Screw a fertilizer injection pump onto the back flow preventer. Fertilizer injection pumps are available from a variety of online retailers as well as your local hardware store.

    • 4

Reattach your filter system onto the injection pump.

    • 5

Mix your fertilizer and water together according to the size of your garden, the plant needs and the mixing instructions of the water soluble fertilizer. Contact the manufacturer of the liquid fertilizer for the weight of nutrients per gallon of water.

    • 6

Attach the rubber hose from the fertilizer container to the injection pump by pushing it into the hole on the injector.

    • 7

Set the injection pump to the gallon per hour setting you require. For example: set your injection pump to 30 gallons per hour if you wish to distribute a 30-gallon tank over a 60-minute period.
