How to Put a Belt on a Yard Man 42'' Lawnmower

The 42-inch Yard Man lawn tractor has a belt that runs from the front of the mower to the deck. The mower engine rotates the deck belt, which moves along the pulley on the deck. The pulleys on the deck turn and engage the mower blades. After several hours of use, the deck belt may wear, become brittle and break, or lose its tension. Regularly replacing your Yard Man deck belt will keep the unit running smoothly.

Instructions

    • 1

Roll the mower onto a flat area. Open the engine cover and pull out the spark plug connector to keep the mower from engaging while work is being done.

    • 2

Move the lift lever that controls the mower deck in the disengagement position.

    • 3

Locate the pulley underneath the engine. Remove the belt keeper pins from around the pulley using a crescent wrench. Unhook the deck belt from the pulley.

    • 4

Push the lift lever all the way forward in the engagement position, so the deck is in the lowest position.

    • 5

Remove the spring from the transaxle inside the left rear wheel using a spring puller tool.

    • 6

Remove the hairpin links and washers from the deck. Remove the hairpins from the stabilizer plate on top of the mower deck and slide it off. Set the lift lever in the disengagement position (all the way back) and pull the deck out from the unit.

Remove the self tapping screws from the belt guards. Notice the way the belt is wrapped around the pulleys. Pull on the belt to remove it and replace with a new belt. Reassemble the unit by following the take-apart instructions in reverse order.
