How to Build a Garden Cage

Garden cages help protect your vegetables, herbs, flowers and other plants from mammal pests, such as rabbits and squirrels. By creating a cage with a frame that fits over the garden, animals cannot access your plants and destroy them while foraging for food. Garden cages can be made any size to accommodate any garden. Additionally, these cages can be covered by a frost cloth to protect the plants from cold weather or provide them with shade, if necessary.

Instructions

    • 1

Measure the length and width of the perimeter of your garden. The garden cage frame will sit on the edge of your garden so it does not interfere with plant growth. Measure and cut 4 pieces of wood to the size of your garden.

    • 2

Attach the 4 side pieces of wood together using wood screws and a drill or screwdriver. The pieces should be attached with 1 screw at each of the 4 corners.

    • 3

Add at least 6 inches to the length and width measurements of your garden; measure and cut the chicken wire to this size. Add more room for height if you are growing taller plants. Plants that grow outside the cage may be susceptible to garden pests.

    • 4

Fold each side of the chicken wire approximately 6 inches from the edge to give the garden cage its protective frame. You can increase the distance from the edge to the fold to protect taller plants.

Use a staple gun to secure the chicken wire to the inside of the frame. Staple the wire at several places along the side of the frame to secure it.
