How to Put on a Poulan Pro 42-Inch Pulley Belt

The pulley belt on a Poulan Pro 42-inch lawn tractor operates the external moving parts on the mower, such as the blades and the clutch. The pulley belt is required to operate the lawn tractor, and if the belt fails, the entire mower will shut down. Check the belt regularly for signs of degradation and cracking. Replace pulley belts as necessary when they start to wear out with ones designed specifically for Poulan Pro lawn tractors.

Move to the right side of the tractor for better positioning in removing the mowing deck. Slide the clutch lever down to the "Disengaged" position. Press the attachment lift lever forward to lower the mowing deck into its lowest position.

Roll the belt off the engine pulley in the back of the deck. Slide the small retainer spring out of the center of the clutch spring. Pull the clutch spring off the pulley bolt. Pull the large retainer spring out of the housing guide on the front of the deck. Slide the collar off the retainer spring and push the housing guide out of the bracket.

Pull the retainer spring out of the chassis bracket to disconnect the anti-sway bar. Pull the retainer springs out of the rear deck brackets and disconnect the suspension arms from the brackets. Disconnect the front links from the deck, pulling the retainer springs out.

Raise the lift lever to lift the suspension arms, separating the tractor from the mowing deck. Put on the gloves. Slide the mowing deck from underneath the mower. Rotate the pulleys slightly and slowly work the belt off the mandrel pulleys and the idler pulley. Take the belt off the mower and discard.

Install the new belt in the reverse order of removal. Turn the pulleys slightly while working the belt onto the mandrel pulleys and then the idler pulley. Position the belt into the pulley grooves and inside the belt guides. Install the mowing deck in the reverse order of removal.
