How to Put a Belt on a Poulan Mower

Drive the Poulan lawn mower into position on a flat area. Depress the foot pedal, engaging the brake, while turning on the parking brake switch. Make sure the parking brake is properly set. Slide the clutch lever downward into the "Disengaged" position.

Remove the mowing deck, if it's still on, from the mower. Lower the adjustment lever into the deck's lowest position. Roll the drive belt off the rear drive pulley on the mower. Disconnect the clutch lever from the clutch rod, pulling out the retainer spring.

Pull the larger retainer spring out of the housing bracket near the anti-sway bar. Push the housing guide out of the bracket. Unhook the anti-sway bar holding the two halves together, pulling out the retainer spring. Unhook the rear suspension arms from the rear housing brackets, pulling out their retainer springs.

Pull out the springs on the front housing guides on the mowing deck. Raise up the mowing deck adjustment lever and pull the mowing deck out from underneath the mower slowly. Work the drive belt slowly off the two mandrel pulleys and the idler pulleys. Pull the old belt off the mower if it's still on.

Fit the new drive belt onto the two mandrel pulleys, slowly working the belt into the pulley guides and onto the idler pulleys and their guides. Install the mowing deck, reversing the sequence you used to remove it. Pull the drive belt around the rear drive pulley on the mower once the deck is installed.
