How to Change the Drive Starter on a Husqvarna 350

The Husqvarna 350 is a premium-quality homeowner-grade chainsaw from the venerable Swedish manufacturer. The saw has a good power-to-weight ratio, is easy-starting and is designed for years of trouble-free service. A common wear item on any chainsaw is the drive starter mechanism, which consists of a wound recoil spring, a pulley and a pull rope. Should the spring or rope wear out or break, it can be replaced in a modest amount of time using simple tools.

Instructions

    • 1

Lay the saw on its right side. Remove the four screws holding the drive starter. Remove the drive starter.

    • 2

Turn the drive starter over so the inside is facing you. If the rope and spring are intact, release the tension on the spring by pulling about six inches of rope out of the starter and placing a loop in the notch on the pulley. Allow the spring to take up this slack, then remove the pulley.

    • 3

To replace the recoil spring, remove the two screws holding the recoil spring housing to the inside of the drive starter unit. Discard the broken spring and place the new recoil spring unit in the driver starter unit.

    • 4

Remove the old starter rope from the pulley and discard it.

    • 5

Feed one end of the new starter rope through the hole in the center of the pulley and tie a strong knot to hold it in place.

    • 6

Wrap the starter rope around the pulley 3-4 times and place the pulley back on the drive starter assembly, making sure the pawls on the pulley catch on the recoil spring.

    • 7

Replace the screw in the center of the pulley.

    • 8

Feed the free end of the starter rope through the hole in the top of the driver starter unit and through the hole in the center of the starter handle.

    • 9

Tie a strong knot on the end of the rope. Trim any excess rope using the box knife.

    • 10

Pull about six inches of slack from the starter and place a loop of the rope through the notch in the starter pulley.

    • 11

Wind the starter pulley 2-3 turns clockwise until the spring is tensioned. Allow the spring to take up the remaining slack in the rope.

    • 12

Place the drive starter back on the chainsaw and replace the four screws.
