How to Remove the Blades on a Poulan 42-inch Lawn Tractor

The mowing blades on a 42-inch Poulan lawn tractor require frequent inspection, sharpening and replacement. Blades will dull and dent as they hit rocks, pebbles and other hard objects. Replace all bent and heavily damaged blades because they will cut poorly or not at all. Poulan doesn't recommend self-sharpening the blades; however, if you do, make sure the blades are balanced and sharpened evenly. Wear all necessary safety clothing whenever working near the blades of the lawn tractor.

Instructions

    • 1

Move the lawn tractor into a flat, level area. Engage the parking brake by pushing in the brake lever. Pull up on the mower deck's adjustment lever to raise the deck to its highest setting, allowing access to the blades.

    • 2

Unscrew the hex bolt on the end of the blade with the wrench. Slide off the hex bolt, lock washer and flat washer. Pull off the old blade from the deck and set aside.

    • 3

Slide the new blade onto the center of the mandrel assembly. Make sure the trailing edge of the blade is facing up towards the deck.

    • 4

Fit the flat washer, lock washer and hex bolt onto the end of the blade. Tighten the hex bolt to 30- to 35-foot-lbs. of torque. Lower the mower deck to the desired height and begin cutting.
