Many people who grow tomatoes use stakes to support the plants. These stakes keep the tomatoes from spreading across the ground and rotting. Worms, for example, can enter the tomatoes easily if they sit on the dirt. Gardeners should stake the plants before the tomatoes start to grow. The exact material used to stake the plants depends on your personal preference. Some gardeners may decide to use bamboo to create a more decorative look, for example.
