What Oil Do I Use for a Husqvarna 46-Inch Mower?

A 46-inch riding lawnmower from Husqvarna needs a consistent supply of lubrication to the piston and crankcase during operation. Without this lubrication, the seals will quickly overheat, blow out and ruin the internal engine. Monitor the supply of oil and the engine's oil consumption regularly to prevent any engine damage.
  1. Type of Oil

    • The 46-inch Husqvarna mower will require an oil that has enough viscosity to protect the engine while allowing the engine to burn consistently at the right temperature for optimal performance. However, since the oil functions to keep the engine cool, the oil should be chosen based on ambient temperatures. When operating in temperatures above 32 degrees Fahrenheit, Husqvarna recommends using an oil with an SAE 30 rating. When temperatures are below 32 degrees Fahrenheit, you can use a multiviscosity oil of SAE 5W or 10W 30.

    Checking the Oil Supply

    • Before operating the 46-inch riding lawnmower, Husqvarna recommends checking the supply of oil in the crankcase. This will give you a more accurate reading than checking afterward, when the oil is heated. Always park the Husqvarna on a level surface to get an accurate oil level reading. Pull out the oil dipstick, wipe off the tip with a rag and fully reinstall the dipstick. Pull the dipstick out again and check the reading. If the oil level has dropped below the "Fill" line, add more oil to the oil spout.

    Adding More Oil

    • When using multiviscosity oils such as a 5W 30 for colder weather operation, these oils will burn up more quickly in the crankcase. You must periodically check and add more oil to the supply to prevent damage to the cylinder and crankcase. Most 46-inch Husqvarna lawnmowers have a 51 fl. oz. oil tank capacity with a filter in place, so they can hold a large amount. However, the oil reading should be at or near the "Full" mark on the dipstick. Slowly pour 3 to 6 oz. of oil into the oil spout at a time. Wait several seconds and check the reading again.

    Changing the Oil

    • For the 46-inch riding lawnmower from Husqvarna, the manufacturer suggests changing the oil after every 50 hours of operation. Change the oil at least once a season, preferably at the beginning of the season, if the mower will not hit 50 operational hours. Always park the tractor on a level surface when changing the oil. Change the oil after the mower heats up, as the oil will flow more freely and drain out better. Replace the oil filter every other oil change or at least once a season.
