How to Change the Belt on a Sears Riding Lawnmower

The drive belt on a Sears riding lawnmower helps deliver power from the engine to the cutting blades while also powering the clutch assembly. This belt allows the engine to stay idling and cutting when you engage the blade lever. Without this belt the mower wouldn't function or cut anything. These belts undergo enormous friction and tension while on the riding mower, so they will break regularly and need changing. Monitor the condition of the drive belt and change it when it starts fraying or cracking.

Instructions

    • 1

Move your Sears riding lawnmower into position on a flat surface. Push in the foot brake pedal and switch over the lever for the parking brake so it's in the "Engaged" position. Move the key to the "Off" setting and remove it from the ignition switch.

    • 2

Slide the clutch lever down to put the transmission in neutral and the clutch into the "Disengaged" setting. Unhook the rubber boot on the spark plug wire from the end of the spark plug. Move the boot and wire into a place where they won't accidentally contact the spark plug during belt replacement.

    • 3

Push down on the attachment lift lever to lower the deck all the way. Roll the engine pulley with your hands while slowly pulling the belt off the engine pulley. Move the mandrel pulleys with your hands while working the belt off of both mandrel pulleys. Take the belt off of the idler pulleys and the mowing deck.

Move the new belt into position on the idler pulleys and around both mandrel pulleys. Work the belt down into the pulley guides and grooves. Roll the engine pulley while working the drive belt onto the engine pulley. Raise up the lift attachment lever to start cutting.
