How to Calculate Lime Into Tons

Lime is a gardening supply that is added to soil in order to help control acid levels. Lime is available in a variety of styles and each form has a different cubic weight. Because lime is a heavy product, when working with large quantities of lime it is easiest to measure the weight in tons. Fortunately, with the assistance of a calculator it is easy to find the weight of a block of lime in tons.

Instructions

    • 1

Measure in inches the length, width and depth of the lime being weighed.

    • 2

Multiply the three dimensions together to find the cubic inches of the lime.

    • 3

Divide the result by 1,728, as there are 1,728 cubic inches in a cubic foot; this will tell you how many cubic feet of lime are being used.

    • 4

Assess the type of lime being used. Lime is available as lumps of quick lime, finely granulated quick lime and in lime stone form.

    • 5

Multiply the cubic feet by the appropriate weight to match your style of lime. For quick lumps, multiply by 53 pounds per cubic foot; for granulated, multiply by 75 pounds per cubic foot; and for stone, multiply by 168 pounds per cubic foot.

    • 6

Divide the result by 2,000, as there are 2,000 pounds in a ton, in order to determine how many tons of lime you have.
