How to Install a Deck Belt in a Scotts Lawn Mower

The deck belt on a Scotts lawn mower rides around the pulley and transfers power from the engine to the cutting blades. Without this belt, the mower couldn't cut the grass, so the belt must be in good working order for the mower to operate properly. Deck belts undergo high amounts of stress and friction when the mower is running at full speed. These deck belts will wear out and eventually rip off, leaving your lawn half-cut.

Instructions

    • 1

Move the Scotts lawn mower onto flat ground and put the mower into park, engaging the parking brake lever. Move the clutch lever to the "Disengaged" setting.

    • 2

Pull the power take off, or PTO, lever back into the "Disengaged" setting. Turn the ignition key to "Off" and remove it from the engine. Raise up the deck lift lever to its highest position. Put wood blocks under both sides of the mower deck. Lower the deck slightly, resting it onto the wood blocks.

    • 3

Pull down on the belt near the rear drive pulley and slowly roll the belt off the pulley. Take out the spring locking pin and washer from the tension rod and disconnect the tension rod from the blade drive arm. Take out the spring locking pins from the front draft rods and disconnect the draft arms from the front axle brackets.

Pull out the spring locking pins and rear draft pins from the rear draft brackets on both sides of the mower. Pull up on the deck lift lever to raise it to its highest position. Pull out the wood blocks and slide the deck from underneath the mower.

    • 5

Unscrew all of the screws holding down the belt guard and take off the belt guard. Work the belt off all of the pulleys and remove it from the mower. Fit the belt onto the pulleys in the same routing as it was before removing it. Position the belt into the pulley grooves and through all of the belt guides.

Fit the belt guard back on the pulley and tighten its screws. Reinstall the mowing deck in reverse order. Fit the belt onto the rear drive pulley.
